Moneim Adwan was born in Rafah, in the Gaza Strip of Palestine, near the Egyptian frontier. He began to sing Palestinian traditional songs and prayers of the Prophet Mohamed in his childhood. At 17 years old he start lute and study to the University of Tripoli (Libya) where he obtained a Master Degree in musicology with Professor Fateh El-Ramiz (song) and Abdallah Sabai (lute).
Since 1999 he has record four disks in France (BudaMusique, Accords Croises/Harmonia Mundi). His last disk is a traveling in the poetry of Gaza with musicians from West-Bank of Palestine, Egypt and his own compositions: Once upon a time in Palestine (Accords Croises/Harmonia Mundi, 2005).
In June 2004, he sung in the Festival of Fez in Morocco and then, on different European stages: Babelmedmusic (Marseille-France, 2005), Cite des Sciences et de l’Industrie (Paris-France, 2004), Festival International de Clarinette (Glomel-France, 2005), Festival des Voix des Pays (Fougeres-France, 2005), Il duomo del Frioli (Italy, 2005), Musical Center of Vredenburg (Netherland, 2006), Theatre de la Monnaie (Bruxelles-Belgium, 2006).
Moneim Adwan also used to compose music for documentary movies and theatre.
Moneim Adwan's songs are inspired by the traditional musical heritage of the region Al-Châm (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine) and by the classical Arab repertory. His compositions are an attempt to keep the tradition alive in a country which waver between modernism and ancestral traditions.
This singer's warm voice, sometimes powerful and sometimes tender, is the most beautiful instrument to convey a human, love and tolerant message in the midst of war and destruction. His possibilities to go out Gaza Strip are al the time an event.
